We all have had a Blue Moon with a slice of orange, even if we don’t want to admit it. In the past, I’ve added ice cream to stouts, eggnog to stouts, sorbet to IPAs, and orange juice to IPAs so I wondered what Blue Moon would taste like if I added something other than a slice of orange.
Step 1: Assemble the ingredients
- Blue Moon
- Tasting Glasses
- Pineapple, blueberries, onion, potato
Yes…onion and potato!
Step 2: Added the ingredients to the tasting glasses
All the beers were pretty much as expected: a light hazy golden color. So far, so good. There was nothing that alluded to the horror that I was to encounter later.
Step 3: Taste the combinations that I wasn’t scared of
Blue Moon + Blueberries
There was an ever-so-thin white film head. The blueberries would take turns rising and falling in the glass. Most would be floating. There was a slight berry aroma and just a slight blueberry taste.
Blue Moon + Pineapple
The head here was a tight white 1/4″ head with no lacing. There was a very minimal tropical citrus nose. I really liked the tart zing that the pineapple imparted into the Blue Moon.
My luck was about to end. Onto Step 4.
Step 4: Oh, the Horror
Blue Moon + Potato
Truthfully, there was no horror with this combination. The potato didn’t do much to either the taste nor the aroma. Interestingly, there was no head and there were many large bubbles coming off of the potato itself. I was a bit disappointed, though. I was hoping for beer that lasted liked mashed potatoes :-)
Blue Moon + Onion
Like the Blue Moon + potato, there was no head. Yikes, I get a strong smell of onions. Surprise! I was a bit happy when, at first, I could barely taste the onions. However, the taste that followed lasted as long as the Energizer Bunny.
Conclusion:
I will not be doing this experiment again. Well, I may repeat Step 3 but I definitely will not try Step 4 again.
